Sofa & Upholstery Care
February 16, 2026
Your sofa takes more abuse than almost any other surface in your home. Spills, pet hair, body oils, dust mites — over time, they all settle deep into the fibres.
Professional upholstery cleaning isn't just about looks; it doubles the life of your furniture and improves indoor air quality. But between professional visits, how you care for your sofa makes a huge difference. Here's our complete guide to keeping every fabric type fresh and clean.
First, know your fabric code
Look under the cushions for a tag with cleaning codes (usually letters). This tells you what's safe:
Daily & weekly maintenance
- Vacuum every week: Use an upholstery attachment to get into crevices, under cushions, and along the base. This removes dust, crumbs, and pet dander before they embed.
- Fluff and rotate cushions: Even wear prevents sagging. Turn reversible cushions over and rotate them front‑to‑back every month.
- Keep out of direct sun: UV rays fade fabric. Use blinds or reposition the sofa if possible.
- No eating rules? At least use a washable throw blanket on high‑traffic spots if you must snack.
How to handle common spills & stains
Golden rule: Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and damages fibres.
Blot immediately with a clean white cloth. Mix 1 tbsp dish soap with 2 cups cold water, dab lightly, then blot with dry cloth. For set‑in stains, a mix of white vinegar and water (1:2) can help.
Dab with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab — don't pour. Blot with a dry cloth as the ink transfers. Repeat with a clean area of the swab each time.
Blot up as much as possible. Apply an enzymatic cleaner (breaks down proteins) — essential for removing both stain and odour. Avoid steam cleaners until the area is fully treated, as heat can set the stain.
Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the spot, let sit for 15 minutes to absorb, then vacuum. For residue, a dab of dish soap in water, then blot.
Fabric‑specific deep care
🛋️ Cotton / linen blends
Generally durable and washable (check code). Mild soap and water works, but avoid soaking the padding. Air dry thoroughly to prevent mildew under cushions.
🧵 Microfiber (polyester)
Very stain‑resistant. For water‑based stains, use rubbing alcohol on a white cloth — it evaporates quickly and lifts dirt. Brush afterward with a soft brush to restore texture.
👑 Velvet / Chenille
Nap can crush. Vacuum gently, and if needed, use a steamer (held at a distance) to lift the pile, then brush lightly with a very soft brush. Avoid heavy water.
🧶 Wool / natural fibres
Delicate. Dry cleaning solvent (S‑code) is safest. If water‑safe, use minimal moisture and a mild wool detergent. Never agitate — blot only.
🪑 Leather (special case)
Wipe with a barely damp cloth; use pH‑balanced leather cleaner. Condition every 6‑12 months to prevent drying and cracking. Keep away from direct heat.
When to call a professional
- Overall dinginess — the fabric looks "tired" even after spot cleaning.
- Persistent odours (smoke, pets, mustiness) that DIY can't remove.
- Stubborn set‑in stains that won't budge.
- Before hosting major events or after an illness (sanitisation).
- Every 12‑24 months for routine deep cleaning — it's like a reset button.
🧼 S.M Cleaning professional insight: Our hot‑water extraction (steam cleaning) for 'W' fabrics reaches deep into padding, removing up to 98% of allergens and bacteria. For 'S' fabrics, we use gentle solvents that evaporate without residue. We always test an inconspicuous area first — and we can often revive colours that looked permanently faded.
Proactive protection
Consider applying a fabric protector after a deep clean. It creates an invisible barrier that makes spills bead up and stains easier to blot. We offer this as an add‑on service — especially recommended for homes with kids or pets.
With the right routine, your sofa can stay beautiful for a decade or more. And when life happens (it always does), we're just a call away.
